Cerebus Archive Number 5: Update #2

Hello everyone! A very sincere THANK YOU to everyone who has supported this campaign so far. We've surpassed our initial goal and are now past the halfway mark for the campaign. To help generate more contributions to help fund the restoration of Cerebus, we're pleased to announce our stretch goals for Cerebus Archive #5!

STRETCH GOAL #1 - $20,000 - NOTEBOOK TWO
If we raise $20,000, every individual who has ordered at least one of the Jaka's Story portfolios, will ALSO receive a digital version of NOTEBOOK TWO! This 199-page notebook features dozens of never-before-seen images by Dave Sim as well as copious notes that went into the development of Cerebus. This notebook is also being offered as an individual reward for $20.

STRETCH GOAL #2 - $25,000 - COLLECTED LETTERS 2006
If we raise $25,000, every individual who has ordered at least one of the Jaka's Story portfolios, will ALSO receive a digital version of COLLECTED LETTERS 2006 (as well as previous stretch goal rewards). This 384 page collection includes letters written by Dave Sim after the completion of Cerebus, including letters to Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr, Neil Gaiman, Joe Matt, Seth, Chester Brown and many, many, many more! This collection of letters is also being offered as an individual reward for $20.

STRETCH GOAL #3 - $30,000 - NOTEBOOK THREE
If we raise $30,000, every individual who has ordered at least one of the Jaka's Story portfolios, will ALSO receive a digital version of NOTEBOOK THREE (as well as previous stretch goal rewards). This 79-page notebook also features dozens of never-before-seen images by Dave Sim and more notes that went into the development of Cerebus. This notebook is also being offered as an individual reward for $20.

STRETCH GOAL #4 - $35,000 - COLLECTED LETTERS 2007
If we raise $35,000, every individual who has ordered at least one of the Jaka's Story portfolios, will ALSO receive a digital version of COLLECTED LETTERS 2007 (as well as previous stretch goal rewards). This 253-page collection includes hundreds of letters written by Dave Sim after the completion of Cerebus, including letters to Gerhard, Chester Brown, Neil Gaiman, Gary Groth, and many, many more! This collection of letters is also being offered as an individual reward for $20.

STRETCH GOAL #5 - $40,000 - NOTEBOOK FOUR
If we raise $40,000, every individual who has ordered at least one of the Jaka's Story portfolios, will ALSO receive a digital version of NOTEBOOK FOUR (as well as previous stretch goal rewards). This 160-page notebook also features dozens of never-before-seen images by Dave Sim and more notes that went into the development of Cerebus. I assume that's $CDN? In which case the $20,000 goal has been met.

Sorry if I'm being dim here, but since nobody else asked...

The way this is worded implies that everyone who pledged for the main portfolio automatically qualifies for the additional 'stretch' rewards once each target is met. If so, that seems to defeat the purpose of stretch rewards, ie I'd have thought you'd want existing pledge people to stump up more money for additionional reward.

Personally, I'd happy pay the extra $20 for each lettered volume / sketchbook. Well worth it.

Dave /Sandeep -- could you clarify?

Thanks,
Tim

Yes, since we've reached 20K, everyone now gets Notebook 2...but we'll need to get it to 25K, 30K, etc. for people to get the additional rewards....sorry for any confusion, we'll probably keep it even simpler for the next one...

Tim, of course, if you are so inclined you can add funds to your pledge in any amount you wish. So, having now gotten notebook 2, if that's worth $20 then up that pledge by that $20...and repeat with each achieved stretch.

Or, lean back and ride the wave...while convincing friends and family to pledge for the portfolio.

We ARE trying to find ways to make sure that MORE people get more rewards (since we've dropped the Bonus Prints for the foreseeable future). Personally, I tend to side with Bill R. on this one. Be honest with yourself about what the pledge item is worth to you, plot that on a graph with what you can COMFORTABLY afford and feel good about getting "relatively free" stuff for fellow CEREBUS fans who can't (as in "no way, no how") afford to pledge for everything.

I'd add: if ALBATROSS 2 is worth $40 to you and you can COMFORTABLY afford that...

And, if possible, give us as much feedback as you can here in the comments section or the comments at Kickstarter as to what your individual assessment/reaction is as we go along. Are the digital rewards worth more to you when you see them? How much more? Remember, there's no right or wrong answer. Just different answers.

So now that we all get notebook 2: If I also want notebooks 3&4, I can add $40 to my pledge to ensure I get them and as a result also contribute towards the next stretch goal for the collected letters? Is that correct?

mseriksen - Yes! Exactly! It's a little odd, I know, buying something that you might end up getting for free but we're trying to err on the side of "a rising tide lifts all boats". There are a LOT of Notebooks and a LOT of Collected Letters so "kicking off" with a FEW of them -- at least potentially -- "in play" seems like the best way to -- seriously -- test the waters. I don't really buy anything myself these days except for groceries, the NATIONAL POST and getting my laundry done so I have a pretty distorted picture of discretionary income. I still find it hard to believe that Kickstarter works as well as it does. Seriously. $21K. With eight days to go. Where do CEREBUS fans find that kind of money?

My question is: If this was Alex Raymond's RIP KIRBY ARCHIVE, how would I want it to go? I mean, I'd HAVE TO GET EVERYTHING, so what's a fair way to "pitch" someone who doesn't spend money on himself? "Oh, you mean if enough RICH PEOPLE buy Raymond's 1947 letters, I get them for FREE?"

COME ONNNNN, RICH PEOPLE!!! LET'S PUMP UP THOSE NUMBERS!! :)

And then I'm the sort of person who goes, "I really should pay for this over again." Like Ron Goulart's ALEX RAYMOND book that came out a while ago. The strip that came out the day Margaret Mitchell got hit by the car (8/11/49). The original art still exists. THIS is what it looks like. It's right THERE on the page. Can you IMAGINE? Someone OWNS the artwork!!

I really need to just write Ron Goulart a cheque every time I thumb through the RIP KIRBY pages. I need to write him a cheque every time I look at that strip. $5.00. $10.00. Just send it in care of his publisher. I wonder what he would make of it?

Dang, Dave is some kinda salesman! I hadn't thought of it that way: "I'll pay for this thing, and if enough other people also pay for that thing, then everyone else will get that thing for free." Isn't that how deflationary spirals start…?

Personally, I'm indifferent to the digital "rewards;" I'm sure I'll download them, and look at them once or twice, but I'd be just as happy without them. But that's just me. I'm not particularly into looking at stuff on a computer screen.

Tony - Well, there's that to it, too. If It wasn't ALEX RAYMOND'S 1947 LETTERS, I'd be selective about what I wanted to get.

[And, like you, I don't like reading stuff on a computer screen so I'd probably get them printed out on two-sided copy paper and then bound into a book.]

It's really more of a "completist" or "research" thing. If you really want to know what I wrote to Chester Brown and Seth and Joe Matt about the "Misunderstanding Comics" jam strip or how The Last Days of Preney Print & Litho "went down", that's all in 2006. But, that's all "outside" of CEREBUS per se. If you're "researching" CEREBUS (just want to know all the pre-history and post-history) first-generation letters are always a primary resource.
