Rejected CIH? Covers

Benjamin Hobbs:

Dave sent a two page fax on Monday, which included an important message for anyone submitting CIH? covers (or thinking about submitting one):

The cover parodies Dave is referring to are:

AARD Comics by Benjamin Hobbs.  Parody of Zap #0.

Flaming Cerebus Comics by Lee Thacker. Parody of Flaming Carrot Comics #1.
The Cerebus Journal by David Birdsong.  Parody of The Comics Journal.

And now it's time for another round of...
Comment Commentaries

Last week David Birdsong wrote in the comments:

"t would be nice to see a checklist of every issue so far for newcomers to the series."

A checklist of all the CIH? issues to date? We can do that!

On the left is a BRAND NEW checklist featuring all the CIH? titles to come out in 2016 and 2017.  On the right is an updated checklist for 2018. Note that several issues, including The Amazing Cerebus, have now SOLD OUT!

Next week: Find out how the new rule about not using " Box Office Poison parody titles" effects Box Office Cerebus' chances of seeing the light of day!

Needs work, David. A Jeff Seiler parody must have lots of. Single. Word. Sentences.

And.

Big paragraph gaps.

For emphasis.

In today's comic shops, Indy comics don't seem to be given the same love and admiration that they once were. It's vital to the continuation of the CIH? one-shots, that that subject of the parody covers is relevant to today's comic fans. Doing covers of the all time classics will always be a safe bet, but we need to look beyond the past and try to grab the attention of the kiddies. Funko (ugh) Pop covers, Guardians of the Galaxy... I don't even know myself what sells these days, but there's got to be something that will make longtime Cerebus fans and casual looky-loos say "hey! I've gotta have THAT!"

Now... I'm off to figure out how to do a Cerebus in Hell? / Harley Quinn cover.

Gary, considering that Dave strongly implied tha Jaka was in hell, along with most of the Cerebus supporting characters, what about Harley in the style of Jaka. Just spitballin'...

I love that Marvel is doing Love & Rockets homage covers these days, but Dave thinks it's too niche for A-V.

I think Dave's antipathy to Love and Rockets stems more from his hatred of TCJ, Fantagraphics, and Gary Groth than objective assessment. I suspect the same thing about Zap -- perhaps the only household-name underground; I wonder if he would have included it if Fantagraphics hadn't republished it recently. I probably agree that Flaming Carrot isn't sufficiently mainstream-famous to be a draw.

What covers do stand out? My impression of the last couple of decades is that covers have become pretty generic, and publishers gave up on casual readers. The logo (eg. Guardians of the Galaxy) might be the most important element of a parody.

Wait, I forgot The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers! Surely there's a joke on "furry" there somewhere? And maybe something about Dave's current anti-drug views, or his past history of over-indulgence?

Part of the problem is that Dave actually jumped on the bandwagon late: the big publishers have been doing homage covers themselves for so long, we're running out of covers to homage.

Although if no one has done a Justice League ('87 version) yet (somehow), that one is a classic cover and been homaged to death AND is still one that is cool when it's redone.

Also, anyone prepped a X-Men 137 (death of Phoenix) or a COIE 7 (death of Supergirl) cover yet? A couple more classic covers to homage.
